NEW YORK -- New York Knicks point guard Raymond Felton is expected to plead guilty to a felony in his gun possession case in exchange for a no-jail sentence, prosecutors said Monday. Hes expected to admit June 30 to at least one charge, attempted criminal possession of a weapon -- he wont have to come to court to do so -- and get a $5,000 fine and 500 hours of community service. "I want to thank the DA for being fair to me in this whole situation," Felton said outside court, also thanking his family, friends and fans "for supporting me and understanding who, the person, I am." His lawyer, Jim Walden, said the plea would allow Felton to "continue his career without interruption." The DAs office had no immediate comment on the agreement. Felton was arrested in February, turning himself in shortly after a Dallas Mavericks-Knicks game at Madison Square Garden. Authorities said his estranged wifes lawyer had brought a loaded semi-automatic handgun to a police precinct, saying it was Feltons and she wanted it out of their house. His wife, law student Ariane Raymondo-Felton, had filed for divorce the week before. Her lawyer didnt immediately respond to an inquiry about Feltons planned plea. Felton was charged with offences including a weapon-possession offence that carries the potential for up to seven years in prison; it outlaws large-capacity ammunition magazines, under some circumstances. The gun in Feltons case had a magazine that could hold about 20 rounds, prosecutors said. His lawyer said Felton never used the gun to threaten anyone. The NBA has said its monitoring the case. The league usually waits until criminal cases against players are resolved before deciding whether to impose any fine or suspension. The former University of North Carolina star, who turns 30 on Thursday, was the fifth pick of the 2005 NBA draft. After five seasons with the Charlotte Bobcats, he had stints with the Knicks, Denver Nuggets and Portland Trail Blazers before returning to the Knicks for the 2012-13 season. Felton averaged a career-low 9.7 points last season as the Knicks went 37-45 and missed the playoffs. The point guard missed 17 games while battling injuries, and team president Phil Jackson recently denied a report that he had told Felton he planned to try to trade him this summer. Felton is set to earn $3.8 million next season and has a player option that would pay him $4 million in 2015-16. Felton is among a few pro athletes who have gotten into trouble with New Yorks strict gun laws. Then-New York Giants wide receiver Plaxico Burress was arrested in 2008 after accidentally shooting himself in a Manhattan nightclub. He pleaded guilty to an attempted weapon-possession charge and served about two years in prison. Fighter Robert Guerrero was arrested at John F. Kennedy Airport last year after he presented a locked gun box containing an unloaded handgun during check-in. However, they could be close. The team had second interviews with Los Angeles Clippers associate head coach Alvin Gentry and assistant Tyronn Lue on Friday, meetings that were expected to include Cavs owner Dan Gilbert. Gentry and Lue are among at least a dozen candidates contacted by the club since Brown was fired on May 12 following a 33-49 season, ending his second stint with the club. While Gentry and Lue appear to be the co-favourites to become Clevelands coach in three years, neither of them has been offered the job and the Cavs search will extend into next week. Cleveland has scheduled an interview with former Maccabi Tel Aviv coach David Blatt, who announced Thursday he was resigning from his job with the European champion to take a coaching job in the NBA. Blatt did not specify which team he was joining, but said he has not been offered the Cavs position. Blatt also has been approached by Golden State to be an assistant under new coach Steve Kerr. The 55-year-old Blatt was first contacted by the Cavs last week, but he has known new Cleveland general manager David Griffin for several years. Blatt is considered an offensive mastermind, and hes been on the radar of several NBA teams. He acknowledged his interest in returning to the U.S. -- he was born in Massachusetts and played at Princeton -- while leading Russia to a bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Blatt said he was leaving Maccabi to "follow my dream." He led the club to a stunning upset over Real Madrid in the European Championships, a victory that touched off massive celebrations in Israel. If the Cavs decide to hire him, Cleveland fans would probably not have the same reaction because Blatt is unknown outside hoops circles and hed be an unconventional choice. Earlier this week, the team met with Charlootte assistant Mark Price, a four-time All-Star point guard in Cleveland who remains one of the most beloved players in franchise history. Embiid has been touted as a franchise-changing player, but there are medical concerns about the 18-year-old, who only started playing basketball a few years ago in his native Cameroon. He missed the NCAA tournament last season with a stress fracture in his lower back, and the Cavs wanted to make sure hes healthy before they considered taking him. The Cavs are not confirming player visits until the day they take place. And while they juggle the coaching search and various options with the top pick, including a trade, the Cavs must also decide whether to offer All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving a maximum, five-year contract extension next month. Irving has given mixed signals about his commitment to Cleveland, and it certainly hasnt helped that the Cavs have been in disarray since he arrived. The team was expected to get to the playoffs last season under Brown, who was fired for the first time four years ago by Gilbert. Maybe the next coach can not only inspire Irving, but get the Cavs back on track. First, though, theyve got to find him.
